Did a fresh install of Ubuntu 13.04 “Raring Ringtail” 64-bit on my PC today. Pleasantly surprised at how full my Steam Library is getting with native Linux ports of games! :D

I’m happy to report Chrome and Skype are working fine and feel really stable! Left 4 Dead 2 Beta is playing at an average 60 fps and that makes me really happy. Oh and look, is that a Hotline Miami beta? ;)

Xbox One games will require a one-time activation code to use, but you’ll still be able to trade and sell them online, Microsoft tells Kotakuâalthough we’re not 100% clear on the details.

So there’s no renting games, no borrowing games. Discs are just to install on the hard drive. If I borrowed a disc from my sister, I’d still have to pay full price for the game before I could play it. …What?

A story about Chris.

I actually know three people named Chris right now. My former supervisor, a recently former co-worker, and a friend who was my co-worker twice now.

Chris the supervisor likes Star Wars and The Regular Show. Chris the recently former co-worker gave me a video card he didn’t need anymore and we chatted a bit about Bioshock Infinite.

Ah, but I bet Anon wanted me to speak about Chris, a long time friend and former co-worker twice over. There’s a bit of history with him.

When I first met Chris, he was dating someone we would later affectionately call “The Angry Lesbian”. She would talk about how men deserved to be castrated and would only call Chris “The Boy”. That was a really interesting dynamic.

But Chris was welcoming. He never seemed to have a problem with me popping over at odd times. He’s the type of guy who would chat up his neighbors and leave his screen door unlocked. He’ll let you borrow anything and never seems to worry about when you get it back to him.

Chris gave me a couch to sleep on when Andrea chose to separate from me years and years ago - I’m not going to get into that here, but the point is that when I couldn’t stand to stay in our apartment, he gave me a place to go. We stayed up late watching TV and did his best to help cheer me up. I’ll never forget that.

Some time later when he and “The Angry Lesbian” decided to break things off, I was able to return the favor and give him my couch for a night. I remember him saying it was the first good night’s sleep he’d had following the break up.

Chris and I wanted to start a band and joined together to get guitar lessons. Fact of the matter is, Chris is better than I’ll ever be at playing a guitar. But man, it was so much fun to meet at the school, catch up, and then go inside and play around on our guitars.

There was a time when Chris invited me out to sing Karaoke. I warned him that my anxiety required I get drunk before stepping up to the microphone, and he was more than willing to cover my tab just so I could have the experience. I probably chose some of the worst songs to sing at a bar (like “So Cold” by Breaking Benjamin) but I had a great time.

I haven’t sang karaoke again. Not in public. But after that night, I still want to go sing some time.

Chris and his fiance Sarah gave me a place to stay when I was faced with the very real possibility of divorce. I needed time to clear my head, to really consider the options and make a firm commitment one way or the other. His generosity helped save my marriage.

Chris is the one friend “in Real Life” I’ve been able to hold onto. We’ve gone to movie premieres together and we’ve gotten drunk together.

I’m not an easy person to have as a friend. I have the worst time of holding onto friendships. I’m glad Chris is one friend I’ve held on to.

I submitted this one to myself because, looking back at the replies I wrote tonight I decided I kinda shafted Allison on a nice long post. Like I wrote for Sarah and Andrea. I’d like to try this again.

So, Allison. A story about Allison.

Allison is someone I only really know from online. We haven’t met in person yet, haven’t spoken on the phone. So I can’t really give a recollection of going out to dinner or hanging out. That makes writing this a little harder.

I don’t want to even attempt to break down a friendship into its parts. And at the same time I don’t want to sit here and just… tell you about her or her life. That’s not my job and that’s not what the point of this is.

We met by chance. I was helping a friend handle commissions online at the time, and Allison was a customer of sorts. What initially was supposed to be checking on details of the order turned into the start of friendship.

Allison is probably as stubborn as Andrea and I are. It’s the only way I can explain why she’s stuck around as long as she has. It’s no secret I can be kind of a jerk, and no one’s been spared of it - especially not Allison. But she’s stood up to me and put up with me and forgiven me and that is… so rare.

I remember when I used to work for Target, and I’d get off my shift and walk out to my car and a text would pop up, from Allison, eager to talk to me. Like clockwork. There were days when I was rude or just not in the mood to talk and I’d shove her away and ignore her — but she’d come right back and push through it and ask how I was doing, or how my day was.

As much as I try to be the sort of person that will listen to a friend and let them vent, Allison goes beyond that. Allison has had her own fair share of… stress. We all have. But she’s quick to set that aside and ask how I’m doing. How I’m feeling.

She was there to help me when I was depressed, consumed with anxiety, facing the possibility of divorce, and even when I was suicidal.

It’s not all bad though! We’ve shared good times too. Allison is the mother of a beautiful little girl, Nova, who is 6 months old. It’s great to see how proud she is of her daughter. I’d like to be a father some day, and through her I’ve been able to get a peek of what it might like to be a parent. The sleepless nights, the protectiveness, the endless love and pride in her baby.

In some ways, Allison reminds me of my mom. Not long after I was born, my dad left and my mom had to figure out what to do with me. She worked hard to make ends meet, to provide for me, to do the best by me she could. And I see that in Allison. I see that strength and determination in her, and I think it’s incredible. I also see how hard it is some days… and try to help where I can, as I can.

Allison started out as a client. Over time she’s become very dear to me. We’ve grown close. She’s one of my best friends and I feel very protective of her. I’d like to get a passport and some money together to visit Allison and Nova, and hope to do so this year.

I just want to give my two cents on this and tell you a story.

A couple weeks ago, I was hired at Target. I have a job at Target. Not a big deal right?

It is a big deal because i’m a transman.

It doesn’t take a genius to conclude that it’s hard for me, my brothers, and sisters to get a job. There are legal restraints regarding the job and if you don’t pass, it’s hard to be taken seriously at a job interview.

Right on the application, it asks what your preferred name is. It also asks if there is anything that target should know. I put the fact that I am a transman, expecting not to get a call because usually when you put that down, people will throw out the application. I got TWO interviews.

At the interview, they asked me about it. I told them I am on hormones and they told me that they didn’t care. Not in the sense that they don’t emotionally care, but that it didn’t matter. I was male and that’s all that mattered. They also told me that they give sex same couples benefits in states that do not recognize them as a married couple.

At my job orientation, I was not misgendered once. Even my supervisors who weren’t sure of my gender avoided pronoun use, which I found only happens when you’ve had pronoun training. They gave me a name tag with my preferred name and didn’t ask questions. I felt safe and respected, which is huge for a trans* person.

TLDR: Target is amazing not just for the LGB, but also the T. Shop there for the rest of your life.

This is important enough to reblog on my main Tumblr blog.

I worked for Target for a while and for retail, the experience wasn’t bad at all. The fact I can still shop there after working for them is rare enough - almost every company I’ve worked for in the past was enough for me to stop being a customer for those companies. Including Apple.

But this, this is just fantastic. Good job, Target. Keep this up and you’ve got a customer for life.
